Easter Idea Blog – Ideas for Easter Crafts, Easter Decorations, Easter Dinner and Easter Flowers

i Have this really fun craft activity to do with my kids for easter the one thing i don’t have is dye can you make dye with like food coloring and water or something help please and soon thanx

You can use food coloring to dye wool, or nylon, or silk, but you CANNOT use it to dye cotton fabric or acrylic yarn, because it will just wash out. If you dye cotton with food coloring, don’t ever wash it, not even once. You can’t set the dye in any way on cotton or acrylic. It’s like using watercolors.

To dye wool with food coloring, soak it in water with vinegar, then sprinkle on food coloring, egg dye, or artificially colored drink mix such as Kool-aid, then heat your dyebath with the wool in it on the stovetop or in the microwave to help the dye set. See the link for detailed recipes.

You can also use acrylic paint on clothing, but it will feel stiff and scratchy after it dries unless you add "fabric medium" or "textile medium". Real fabric paint gives much better results.

I found an easter Lily plant on the ground broken off from its bulb. Can you root them like this and if so, how or what is the most successful way? Thanks.

No. It will not root. If you want to increase your Easter lily numbers, dig up the bulbs after the tops have turned brown. Dig carefully, as the bulbs can be quite large. Often, there are tiny "baby bulbs" attached to the parent bulb. You can replant these baby bulbs and they will sprout greenery next spring. However, it may take two or three years or more for them to produce flowers.

Many parents are now buying there kids these expensive gifts like: new bikes, game systems, iPODs, etc.
Am I just old?? I was lucky to get a stuffed bunny in my candy filled basket.

What are your thoughts?

Well thank heavens it isn’t only me! I noticed that too and now somewhat participate in it because I feel, to an extent, that I have to! No really big ticket items until xmas or preferably birthday but I’ve added books, action figures, and this year a video game.

When I was a kid, the prepared baskets in stores had some candy and maybe one or two stuffed animals or a yo yo or stickers. Now, go to the store and what do you see? They are all giant baskets stuffed with sports equipment, cars/trucks/planes, giant art sets, etc.

It’s the increase in consumerism and the desensitivity to stimulation. If I got one stereo and nothing else for xmas, I was through the roof with excitement. Now, if a kid gets one stereo for xmas, the attitude is "that’s it?"

If gifts are from parents, then they can be explained away by the family budget or family values. But Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy are supposed to be equal with limitless resources and therefore parents must do what others are doing. If Santa gives the neighbor a bike and you got a shirt/if the Easter bunny gives your classmate a Nintendo DS and you got a chocolate bunny/if the tooth fairy gives your cousin 10 dollars and you got a quarter….how would a parent explain that?

Art gives your child a chance to express themselves through their imagination. Art allows children to explore and understand their world through creative experiences that emphasize the process of art, not the product. When your child is creating there is no right or wrong way, only their way. (Art instruction does not have specific guide lines for children to follow like a craft.) Art allows your child to be free in their creative mind.

This is great veggie side…I’ve made it before

Roasted Asparagus with Hollandaise
Asparagus:
1 pound medium asparagus
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Sauce:
1 large egg yolk
1 1/2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Pinch cayenne pepper
4 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/2 stick)
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
Trim the woody ends from the asparagus. Spread the spears in a single layer in a shallow roasting pan baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and roll to coat thoroughly. Roast the asparagus until lightly browned and tender, about 10 minutes, giving the pan a good shake about halfway through.

Meanwhile, put the egg yolk, lemon juice, and cayenne in a blender. Pulse a couple times to combine.

Put the butter in a small microwave proof bowl and heat in a microwave until just melted. With the blender running, gradually add the melted butter into the egg to make a smooth frothy sauce. If the sauce is really thick blend in a teaspoon of lukewarm water to loosen it up. Season with the salt and serve immediately or keep warm in a small heat-proof bowl set over hot (but not simmering) water until ready to serve.

Spread the roasted asparagus on a serving platter. Grind a generous amount of pepper over the top.

Cook’s Note: This recipe can be easily doubled. If you double the recipe, be sure to place the stems on the baking sheet so that the tips are pointed toward the center, and the bottoms are pointed out, toward the edges of the pan. Since the tips are thinner than the stems, they tend to cook faster. However, when roasting, items at the edges of the pan cooked more quickly than those in the center. Taking the time to lace them this way helps the asparagus cook evenly.
